Landscape photography trip
Stob pyramids are a majestic set of land formation situated only about an hour drive south of Sofia, Bulgaria. At the end of the road you start a walk along a track for about 40 minutes that takes you up to a wonderful panorama view. From a distance the pyramids do not look very exciting but the truth is, you don’t see the whole set.
I have been thinking about coming here for a long time and finally I made it. It was a wonderful sunset which lit the rusty colored pyramids in warm yellow. It was majestic!
Stob pyramids
The pyramids are divided into two distinct groups. The pyramids themselves are 30-40m wide and 12 m high. Many of them have “hats” made of rocks 120×80 cm each. These have stayed on the top of the pyramids as a result of atmospheric conditions when rain, snow and wind have shaped the pyramids.
The legend
There are several legends related to these pyramids. One of the most famous tells a story about a young couple in love. However the mother of the bride has been against the marriage and cursed everyone from the wedding procession to become a rock. At the moment when the groom has kissed the Bride, everyone at the procession converted into pyramids by sand and rock. That is how today’s names of the pyramids are “The Bride”, “The towers”, “Parents in law”, etc.
Here are a few images from my trip. Hope you enjoy them:
