It’s been a long time since I last did any landscape photography and any related blog post. Well, here I am back again with a story from the past weekend when I wanted to explore some areas not far from Sofia. This trip is meant to be a gorge photography. I set the alarm for 5,30 aiming for the sunrise. It was going to take me about an hour driving so this early start should give me enough time to get to my destination. I was aiming towards the Iskar river Gorge.
It was a beautiful morning but it was missing what we photographers call “athmosphere”. The sky was totally clear with no clouds so the only thing I could do is just explore the area. At the first destination I did some test shots here and there but nothing spectacular. This site would be suitable for another season and other conditions. Autumn or winter would be way better with some colourful leaves or layer of snow cover. The landscape is rather dramatic with sheer cliffs, river and houses here and there so there is good potential.
I carried on along my way to another spot which looked much more promising. With my arrival I decided that “this would be the place for sunset”. I did look it up last night in the Photographers Ephemeris and the sunset was promising to be from the right direction. A small hilltop had 360 degrees view towards a valley with the river and towards the mountain tops. Well, here are my test shots that I did at the end of the day at sunset and backlight along the gorge:
After this location i carried on towards some other areas but just as the first one from the day they didn’t prove very photogenic in the current light. Will definitely be going back there when the snow falls. It was a great walk out of Sofia for the day and it proved successful with the new location and experience.
